MAZDA’S FROG RESCUE
Mazda Canada recently helped an international stowaway—a Cope’s gray treefrog—return safely to its native home in Georgia. The treefrog, which was found by a truck driver in his cab after crossing the border into Mississauga, was taken to Toronto Wildlife Centre to be examined. After a 40-day stay, the tiny traveller was driven to New York to be flown home to Chattahoochee Nature Center Wildlife Rehabilitation, which specializes in the care of amphibians.
Nathalie Karvonen, Executive Director of Toronto Wildlife Centre, said: “Mazda has been a wonderful supporter of our work since 2015 and has donated two vehicles to our rescue program. This means that many more wild animals are helped. We also receive funds that are raised by employees and then matched by Mazda.”
MAZDA MX-5 UPDATED FOR 2020
A host of updates to the 2020 Mazda MX-5 have made the world’s favourite sports car even more desirable. The car is more appealing than ever inside, with perforated leather seats now available, including the option of a dynamic new red colour scheme. All stitching in the cabin—from steering wheel to gear lever—is now a soothing grey, providing a calm, premium feel. Mazda’s First Electric Car
An electric car that feels completely natural to drive—that’s what is on offer from the all-new Mazda MX-30, the SUV that promises to usher in a new era for EVs. Mazda has produced a model that puts people at the heart of the experience with a blend of stunning design, an easy to use and beautifully crafted cabin, and the great handling and stability you’d expect of any Mazda.
Revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show, the MX-30 makes an immediate impact with a striking look that includes bold freestyle doors for easy access. The sophisticated exterior takes Mazda’s Kodo—Soul of Motion design philosophy in a new direction with a dramatic three-tone finish.
Inside, the premium-quality cabin features bespoke materials and handcrafted cork surfaces, providing a soothing ambience to complement the modern design. There are two screens—an upper 8.8-inch panel that displays the navigation and entertainment features, plus a lower display that operates the climate control.
As with every Mazda, the driving experience is key to the MX-30. e-G-Vectoring Control Plus ensures strong driving dynamics while, unusually for an EV, the braking is smooth and feels natural. The car’s battery – which has been chosen to limit the impact on the environment – is made of lightweight materials and delivers a range of 200km, more than enough for most drivers’ daily needs.
Mazda Hero: Paul Stover
The lifestyle in North Vancouver, British Columbia is an enviable one. A hub of outdoor activity, open mountain roads and endless coastal trails are a stone’s throw away for residents like Paul Stover. As an avid sportsman and busy father, he needs a set of wheels (or two) to facilitate his often-hectic routine.
Paul was first bitten by the Mazda bug in 2015, when a stream of great reviews in car magazines led him to purchase a 2014 Mazda6 sedan. He instantly became a superfan, and over the next five years added a 2006 MX-5 and a 2016 Mazda3 GT to his driveway. The 45-year-old commercial pilot describes the Mazda6 as the perfect family car. Last fall saw a particularly memorable trip. With their bikes up on the car’s rack, Paul and his son and daughter explored Whistler, even star-gazing one evening out of the Mazda6’s sunroof.
However, the sedan doesn’t get all the action. When Paul isn’t cliff-diving, road-biking or hiking in the mountains, he’s cruising the Sea to Sky Highway in his MX-5. He fondly calls it his “therapy car” and has enjoyed a string of solo adventures in it, including springtime drives with only a pair of skis in the passenger seat.
Paul has even managed to integrate the MX-5 into his family life. He recalls: “One of my favourite memories is taking my son camping in Pemberton. We packed our sleeping bags, some food and a tent in the trunk, and spent a night in the wilderness.”
From Oregon to the Okanagan, Paul has travelled far and wide with his Mazdas. You might wonder how he finds the time to enjoy his cars with such a busy schedule and his taste for extreme sports. “That’s simple,” he smiles. “Nothing beats the thrill of driving.”

Mazda3 Wins Top Award
The Car Guide has awarded the Mazda3 its prestigious New Car of the Year honour for 2020. The model beat stiff competition in the form of the Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche Taycan, and was praised for its “inspired design, superb driving dynamics and a clever mix of available features”.
The judges also hailed the “addition of all-wheel drive on select models” as being an important feature for Canadian drivers. The Car Guide offers a benchmark of excellence for the automotive industry and has been helping Canadians choose their next vehicle since 1995.
Mazda Team Joest: A Season To Remember
Mazda Team Joest wrapped up a successful season in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with a brave performance at the final race, the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in Georgia. The second half of the 10-hour marathon saw the No.77 Mazda RT24-P, driven by Timo Bernhard, Oliver Jarvis and Tristan Nunez, establish itself in the lead.
Jarvis was out in front until the final caution of the race, with 40 minutes left. But a mechanical failure after the restart saw the Englishman fall back and ultimately finish in sixth. The No.55 Mazda RT24-P, driven by Jonathan Bomarito, Olivier Pla and Harry Tincknell, was retired in the fifth hour with a mechanical failure. A frustrated Jarvis said afterwards: “It was really ours to win and it’s pretty difficult to take that we didn’t.” But it couldn’t take the shine off what was a successful 2019 for Mazda Team Joest, which recorded three victories over the course of the season.
The breakthrough win came at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen in New York, when Bomarito, Pla and Tincknell led home Bernhard, Jarvis and Nunez in second. Jarvis and Nunez then stood on top of the podium at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Ontario in the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix, before Bomarito and Tincknell took the honours at the IMSA Road Race Showcase at Road America in Wisconsin. Former director of Mazda Motorsports John Doonan summed up a tremendous 2019 by saying: “I am immensely proud of every person on the staff and the work they put in to elevate this program in 2019.”
Club Focus: Wild Rose Miata Club
Situated in the heart of the Alberta prairies, Edmonton’s Wild Rose Miata Club (WRMC) celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2019. Its membership currently stretches north to Whitehorse; west to Victoria and east to Winnipeg. Plus it shares a few members with its sister-club, Calgary’s Canadian Rockies Miata Club. The WRMC is fortunate to be able to hold monthly club meetings at a local Mazda dealer. Its quarterly Miata Musings newsletter is sought-after reading material.
When Mazda’s iconic MX-5 Miata celebrated its 30th anniversary, the club’s membership rose to the occasion, purchasing six 30th Anniversary MX-5 cars. However, the club also has a few original-owner 1990 cars along with the full range of years and models, including a few JDM Eunos (first generation) and Mazda Roadsters (second generation). Modifications run the gamut from nearly stock to supercharged and turbocharged first and second generations and supercharged third and fourth generations. The club also has a number of Spec Miata racers, including the 2017 and 2018 Miata vs. Miata and 2018 WCMA Spec Miata champion.
A highlight of the year was the WRMC’s Show’n’Shine event, held in conjunction with the Reynolds-Alberta Museum’s “History Road” event. This annual gathering shows off cars from the early 1900s to the modern day and is the largest single-marque club display each year.
The WRMC recently undertook an epic 8,500-kilometre road trip to the Miata Reunion event at the famous Laguna Seca Raceway. WRMC members have attended this reunion every year since 2010.
During its most recent trip to California, club members stopped at Simpson Design (purveyor of the Miata Italia re-body) and at Mazda North America Operations’ R&D Centre to view its Heritage Collection of historic race cars, show cars and other notable vehicles. The WRMC has enjoyed the entire Pacific Coast Highway and many other seriously twisty roads—Miata heaven!

MAZDA TECHNICIAN LLOYD BLACKWOOD
This issue we visit Steele Mazda St. John’s in Newfoundland to chat with Mazda Technician and eight-time Mazda owner Lloyd Blackwood.
How long have you worked with Mazda?
I’ve been with the company for over 30 years! I trained as an apprentice for two years and I’ve worked as a Mazda Technician ever since. I’ve worked across different dealerships over the years and I’ve been at Steele Mazda for the past five.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Teaching the new generation. We use a lot of technology in our day-to-day work, but it’s still good to show them the old-school tricks. It can be quite hectic on the floor, but I want to stay in the belly of the beast until I retire!
What inspired you to work in this industry?
My father worked as a chief engineer on boats. I didn’t want to go to sea, but I liked the mechanical aspect of his job. Growing up surrounded by his work means that I was able to make a successful career out of mechanics.
Do you own any Mazdas?
Yes, I’ve owned eight Mazdas since 2007. I’ve had a 1987 B2000, a 1992 B2600, a 1994 Protegé, a 1998 626, a 2004 MPV, a 2007 B4000, a 2013 Mazda6 and a 2016 CX-5.
Has technology changed the way you work?
Absolutely. We used to rebuild engines one piece at a time, but now we can easily diagnose the problem with our computers and replace one component. If you want to keep up, then you have to keep on learning.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to be a Mazda Technician?
If you want to succeed in this role, then you have to work hard, study the vehicles and learn as much as you can. It’ll treat you well in the long run.
